Encouraged by the success of a school production of the Gondoliers, a group of the students involved in that production collaborated with Mr. Pilcher, a respected teacher at the school and lover of G&S who used to give up his time to direct the school's productions, to try and find a way of continuing the tradition. It was decided to form a group encompassing parents and past pupils as well staff and any pupils that might be interested. A circular was distributed through every pupil advising parents of the initiative and inviting them all to an inaugural meeting. The meeting was a great success and those present resolved to present The Mikado the following summer. This was true collaboration, with the school providing rehearsal space, costumes, scenery and the orchestra. And so the Kingsbury Amateur Operatic Society was born. The Mikado was a sell-out and secured the financial independence of the Society. Since then, KAOS has presented over 60 productions at the school and still counts some of its original cast among its present Members, including the current Chairman, Mike Stevens. The Society is Registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales and presents two public productions each year. The variety and professionalism of these presentations provides local audiences with a broad experience of musicals and operetta ranging from the virtually unknown The Rose of Persia, through the ever popular G&S operetta and Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, to brand new productions such as RAGS. Work by composers ranging from Jaques Offenbach to Edward German, from Franz Lehar to Lionel Bart, from Frank Loesser to Sammy Fain. |
